A benign but slowly progressive condition that causes contractures of fascial layers in palm and fingers resulting in limitation and restriction of movement, most notably the ring & little fingers, but any digit can be affected.
By forming nodules & cords in the fascia that slowly and progressively shorten under the skin of the hand, the disease causes digits to curl in (picture).
Treatment in most cases is surgical, whereby the disease fascia is removed (with or without skin excision).
Recovery takes 2-3 weeks during which physiotherapy may be needed. This disease is difficult to cure and most patients develop a recurrence within 5-10 years. In these cases, re-operation may be needed.
