Scars are dynamic and change appearance with time. Most scars go through certain phases where they look and feel fine and soft only to thicken up and turn hypertrophic for a time. After that, scars soften up and lighten in colour and so become more acceptable and blend easily into the surrounding skin.
If scars remain thick and hypertrophic for extended periods or cause deformity of adjacent structures such as mouth or eyelids, then they can be revised surgically.
